EASTERN POMO LANGUAGE

Big Valley Rancheria received a three year ANA Grant to preserve and promote the Eastern Pomo Language spoken on the Big Valley Rancheria.

During year one (2003), Big Valley Rancheria held Eastern Pomo Language classes on the rancheria and outdoor field trips outside the rancheria. Tribal elders taught tribal members of all ages how to speak in their native tongue, Eastern Pomo, and a history lesson as well.

While tribal elders spoke Eastern Pomo, digital video and audio gathered their teachings, preserving the language for present and future generations. This method of documentation will continue on in years two (2004) and three (2005). The material compiled will be developed into multimedia learning tools.
